Basic IRC Commands and Features

This is a list of basic IRC chat commands and features of the server we use that users should know.

IRC Commands are typed right in the chat window and start with a /

Nick Registration

Registering your nick preserves it with a password so that only you can use it.

To register your nickname:

First make sure you are using the nickname you want to register, if not, change to the nickname you want to register by typing /nick nicktoregister (replace nicktoregister with the nickname you want to register), then type:

/msg NickServ REGISTER "password"

Change "password" to a password of your own that is hard for people to guess. Using "password" as your password is NOT a good idea ;)

Grouping multiple nicks

Sometimes, you may want to register more than one nickname. In this case you can group all your nicknames under your main nickname. This way you will have the same password for all your nicknames and memo's sent to one of your nicknames can be read by ANY of your nicknames.

To group a new nickname to your main nickname, do the following:

Change to your new nickname

Type /msg NickServ GROUP mainnicktogroupto mainnickpassword

For example, if your main nickname is Roomie with the password mypass and you wanted to register an away nick Roomie-away, you would do the following:

Type /nick Roomie-away

Type /msg NickServ GROUP Roomie mypass

Now, all memos send to Roomie-away will still be accessible to Roomie, when changing from Roomie to Roomie-away or Roomie-away to Roomie, you will not be asked for a password each time.

/join  The join command is used to connect to other rooms on the network.  Rooms on the network always start with a # an example of this is /join #CovertHypnotism.

/list  The list command is used to generate a list of all the visable rooms on the network.

/me  The me command denotes you are doing an action action message. Type /me 'does anything' Example: /me waves hello

/nick The nick command changes your nickname Example: type /nick newnickname

/query The query command allows you to open a private message box to a user.  Example /query usernick message

/ignore Unfortunately, there will be times when you don't want to talk to someone, or else someone may be harassing you. By typing /ignore thenickyouwanttoignore, you will not receive anymore messages

If you want to ignore ALL Private Messages from EVERYONE, you can type the following:

/mode yournickname +D

For example, if your nickname was Kinkster69, you would type

/mode Kinkster69 +D

If you want stop ignoring everyone, you would type

/mode Kinkster69 -D

If you want to ignore ALL Private Messages from NON-REGISTERED CHATTERS, you can type the following:

/mode yournickname +R

For example, if your nickname was Kinkster69, you would type

/mode Kinkster69 +R

If you want stop ignoring everyone, you would type

/mode Kinkster69 -R
